Amado mio… Chissà quante volte sarà capitato al mio amico Giuliano Amato (ci conosciamo da quasi mezzo secolo avendo assiduamente frequentato via del Corso al tempo del PSI di Craxi) di rassegnarsi a battute e scherzi sul suo cognome, così assonante con quella canzone – Amado mio – lanciata nel 1946 da Rita Hayworth (in playback) che ha attraversato l’Italia del dopoguerra, quella della sua (e mia) giovinezza.

Così mi perdonerà, se leggerà questa mia letterina (non è da escludere, perché Amato è sempre stato un lettore onnivoro, di leggendaria memoria), se anch’io gioco un po’ sul suo cognome, che è tornato di attualità qualche settimana fa a causa della sua nomina a presidente del Comitato ministeriale incaricato di studiare l’impatto dell’Intelligenza artificiale (IA) nel settore dell’informazione.

Come potrà un ottantacinquenne occuparsi di una cosa come l’IA, che riguarda i giovani e le generazioni future, è stata la domanda di molti, ripresa anche da importanti quotidiani, che però si sono ben guardati dal rivolgerla anche al centenario Henry Kissinger, che proprio all’IA ha dedicato le sue ultime riflessioni alla vigilia della sua scomparsa? Non si sa che cosa deciderà di fare Amato, la cui nomina, non gradita – a quanto è filtrato – dal premier Meloni che non sarebbe stata preventivamente informata, si deve peraltro a un sottosegretario (Mario Barachini) del governo da lei stessa presieduto.

Se decidesse di dimettersi aggiungerebbe un altro elemento alla sua inarrivabile collezione di ex qualcosa: ex presidente del Consiglio (due volte), ex ministro di vari ministeri, ex vicesegretario del PSI, ex deputato, ex senatore, ex presidente dell’Autorità antitrust, ex presidente della Treccani, ex presidente della Corte costituzionale, solo per citare gli incarichi più importanti, ai quali ne manca uno solo, ex presidente della Repubblica. Ma io spero che non lo faccia, e non solo per solidarietà generazionale, ma anche perché Amato si è sempre occupato di innovazione tecnologica, come ben sa chi lo conosce. D’altra parte, il Comitato che ha avuto l’incarico di presiedere riguarda gli aspetti culturali e normativi dell’impatto dell’IA sull’informazione (non quelli tecnici, dei quali si occupa un altro Comitato ad hoc): un tema etico-giuridico nel quale contano la competenza e l’esperienza, non l’età. E chi meglio di lui?

Letter to Giuliano Amato, the former president of almost everything

Amado my… Who knows how many times it must have happened to my friend Giuliano Amato (we have known each other for almost half a century having assiduously frequented Via del Corso at the time of Craxi’s PSI) to resign himself to jokes and jokes about his surname, so in tune with that song – Amado mio – launched in 1946 by Rita Hayworth (in playback) who traveled through post-war Italy, that of his (and my) youth.

So he will forgive me, if he reads this little letter of mine (it cannot be ruled out, because Amato has always been an omnivorous reader, of legendary memory), if I also play a little on his surname, which became relevant again a few weeks ago after his appointment as president of the ministerial committee responsible for studying the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in the information sector.

How can an eighty-five year old deal with something like AI, which concerns young people and future generations, was the question of many, also taken up by important newspapers, who however were careful not to also ask the centenarian Henry Kissinger, who dedicated his last reflections just to AI on the eve of its death? It is not known what Amato will decide to do, whose appointment, not appreciated by Prime Minister Meloni who had not been informed, is also due to an undersecretary (Mario Barachini) of the government chaired by herself.

If he decided to resign he would add another element to his unrivaled collection of former somethings: former prime minister (twice), former minister of various ministries, former deputy secretary of the PSI, former member of Parliament, former senator, former president of the Antitrust Authority, former president of Treccani, former president of the Constitutional Court, just to mention the most important positions, of which only one is missing, former President of the Republic. But I hope he doesn’t do it, and not only out of generational solidarity, but also because Amato has always been involved in technological innovation, as anyone who knows him knows well. On the other hand, the Committee that he was tasked with chairing concerns the cultural and regulatory aspects of the impact of AI on information (not the technical ones, which another ad hoc Committee deals with): an ethical-legal field in which competence and experience count, not age. And who better than him?
